Take Precautions to Avoid Gift Card Fraud1 min read
When shopping for friends and loved ones during the holidays, gift cards are often a convenient option. According to a public service announcement issued by the Federal Bureau of Investigation they also give thieves an opportunity to make off with your money.
Here are some tips on how you can avoid gift card scams and protect yourself this holiday season.
- Purchase directly from reputable companies. Go to the restaurant or department store in person or visit their website to make your gift card purchase. The same applies for big box stores and airlines as well.
- If you’re considering gift cards from an online auction, make sure you check seller reviews. It is likely there is a reason they are selling the card at a discounted price. It’s not worth the risk of purchasing a card that is counterfeit or stolen.
- Inspect the card thoroughly. Prior to purchasing a gift card, examine the front and back to be sure it hasn’t been tampered with. Specifically, make sure any PIN codes have not been exposed.
- If you can, register the card online. If the store has an option to register your gift card on their website, you will be able to check your balance on a regular basis.
