Avoid Hiring Mistakes in Your Business1 min read
Making mistakes when staffing your business can turn out to be a disaster. Consider the following three common errors before making any staffing decisions for your business.
- Bringing on friends and family to staff your business. In some instances, hiring friends or family may work out, but more often this strategy causes problems in the workplace. Friends and family often, even subconsciously, expect different treatment from other employees in the workplace. This can damage morale and productivity among employees, whether or not the double standard is real or perceived. It is always important to focus on the needs of your business and applicant qualifications when making hiring decisions.
- Putting trust in a handshake. Put into writing all arrangements made with your new employee. Draft an offer letter that covers compensation, bonus opportunities and rights to intellectual property. Create a personnel manual that spells out responsibilities and expectations within your business.
- Adding a partner without good reason. Bringing in a partner can bear risks such as
surrendering a portion of your company to someone else and losing control over important management decisions. Prior to adding a partner to your company ask yourself what, other than money, they will contribute. Avoid ending up in the business equivalent of divorce court by exploring all scenarios and making wise decisions when considering a partner.
