Beware of Bogus Charities1 min read

When a crisis occurs, you want to help the victims.  Unfortunately, times of crisis are also when con artists are abundant and waiting to take advantage of your generosity.  When you plan to make a donation toward any cause watch for these signs that indicate a charity is likely not authentic.
Watch out for the fly-by-night charity. Legitimate charitable organizations are continually being established.  However, in the event of a major crisis, such as a natural disaster, go with a charity that has a proven track record and has earned your trust.  Consult a charity watchdog group if you aren’t sure about a charity’s authenticity. disaster-relief-scam-2
Be on alert for the evasive caller. Don’t be afraid to ask direct questions if you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be with a charitable organization.  You should also expect direct answers as a legitimate caller will be upfront with all details of the charity.  They should be able to answer questions about fund allocation and specific groups that your donation will help.  Be cautious of phrases such as “educating the public” or “promoting awareness” which do not provide definite or clear answers.
An urgent online request typically indicates suspicious activity.  You never know who is on the other end of a plea for money that is sent via email or posted on social media.  You should never offer financial information via email nor should you ever assume that messages posted about a charity on social media are reliable.
In times of crisis, you want your donation to provide help where it is most needed.  Don’t let a con artist benefit from your good intentions.  Allow yourself time to further research and ensure the validity of the charity you’ve chosen.
